Bức tranh thủy mặc lớn nhất Việt Nam mang tên "Trăm hoa đua nở" ra mắt tối 21/2/2008 tại TP.HCM nhân tết Nguyên tiêu.

Bức tranh thủy mặc được xem là lớn nhất Việt Nam này có kích thước dự kiến ban đầu là 1,1m x 4,5m. Tuy nhiên, do được thực hiện từ một cuốn giấy dài chưa cắt nên kích cỡ tranh đã được tăng lên 1,22m x 5m, tự phá kỷ lục theo nét cọ phóng khoáng của các họa sĩ.
18 họa sĩ chuyên vẽ tranh thủy mặc, trong số hơn 40 họa sĩ thuộc CLB Mỹ thuật Quận 5, TP.HCM đã cùng thực hiện bức tranh kỷ lục theo lối hoa điểu (một trong các phong cách của tranh thủy mặc như sơn thủy, nhân vật...) này . Người khai cọ cho bức tranh là họa sĩ Quang Tồn Chí, với một cành bạch mai ở góc trái tranh. Lần lượt các họa sĩ tiếp nối nhau hoàn tất bức vẽ, lúc nhiều nhất có 8 họa sĩ cùng múa cọ.
Họa sĩ Trần Văn Hải, người tham gia vẽ phần hoa kiếm lan và phụ trách thường trực trông nom bức tranh, cho biết điểm khó nhất trong việc thực hiện bức Trăm hoa đua nở là phải hòa hợp được bút pháp của tất cả 18 họa sĩ: "Bức tranh thể hiện tinh thần đoàn kết, đồng tâm của các họa sĩ, phải hiểu nhau rất rõ thì chúng tôi mới có thể vẽ chung được với nhau".
Tuy vậy, phải mất cả tuần, các họa sĩ (người lớn nhất là Văn Tích Túc đã ngoài 80, người trẻ nhất là Lý Chánh Vân mới hơn 20 tuổi) mới hoàn tất được bức tranh mà cả nhóm đã thai nghén ý tưởng từ trước đó cả năm. Nếu sai khác nhau về bút pháp, phải hủy tranh để vẽ lại. Do đó, người vẽ sau phải hiểu và nắm được bút lực của người vẽ trước để nương theo đó mà phóng cọ cho thật khớp và nhuần nhuyễn.
Người thưởng tranh khó nhận ra đây là tác phẩm do nhiều người thực hiện. Tuy nhiên, họa sĩ Trần Xuyên, người phụ trách việc đề chữ, khâu quan trọng để cho ra một bức tranh thủy mặc hoàn chỉnh, thừa nhận: "Tác phẩm có ưu điểm là các họa sĩ đã kiềm chế mình để hòa hợp với nhau, nhưng có hạn chế là không gian của tranh hơi chật so với sự thoáng đãng của thủy mặc truyền thống".
Bức Trăm hoa đua nở hiện vẫn chưa được bồi và lồng khung, kính vì kích cỡ quá khổ chưa đặt hàng kịp. Tranh được trưng bày đến ngày 29/2 và dự kiến sẽ được bán đấu giá để làm từ thiện.
